9 days of Simbang Gabi

Philippines is known to have the longest yet merriest Christmas in the world. A part of the longest Filipino Christmas season is the traditional Simbang Gabi. This is a time when Catholic churches across the nation open the church doors shortly before he break of dawn to welcome faithfuls to the Simbang Gabi.

SIMBANG GABI is one of the longest and most popular among the Filipino traditions in the country. It is when Catholic churches across the nation start to open their doors shortly before the break of dawn to welcome the faithful to the Simbang Gabi mass.

Simbang Gabi or Mass at Dawn is a nine-day novena to the Blessed Mother. The novena begins December 16 as early as 4 in the morning and culminates with the “Misa de Gallo” on Christmas Eve to welcome the birth of our Savior Jesus Christ. In some churches, the panuluyan is reenacted showing the effort of Joseph and Mary to find a suitable birthplace.
December 16 – I woke up 4:00 am to prepare for the 1st day of Simbang Gabi. When me and my mom arrived at WVSU – Chapel it was already full. Luckily I brought an extra chair for me to sit on it. I was very tired but I still have to do my obligations. After the mass me and my mom went to Jaro to buy some pandesal for our breakfast and we went to Jaro market to buy some food for our visitor.
December 17 – I woke much earlier because we will have our Field Trip. I took a bath at 3:30 am and we went to church for the 2nd day of the Simbang Gabi. I was so excited for the field trip. We left at school so late because we have to wait for our classmates especially JP. In the end we really left him.
December 18 – I attended the simbang gabi. We had our reunion –Borja Family- at Maasin, Iloilo
I completed the whole 9 days of simbang gabi. I really had fun. It was a great experience. I can’t wait for the next simbang gabi.

P.S It’s my second time to complete.

  1. I completed mine, too! Did you make a wish or intention? They said if you complete the whole nine days, God will grant you your intentions. He granted mine ;)
